The southernmost region of Africa is a sub region of the Overberg and stretches from Gansbaai in the west, through Buffeljags, Die Dam, Cape L’Agulhas, Struisbaai and Waenhuiskrans/Arniston up to the mouth of the Breede River in the east.

The history of this area is closely interwoven with the early history of the Cape South Africa.  A few stock farmers established themselves here as early as 1710.  Families settled as pioneers in the southern coastal area, as did shipwreck survivor of various nationalities.  The coast is notorious for its shipwrecks and is known as ‘The Graveyard of Ships’. No fewer than 120 ships have sunk or gone aground here.  Soetendal, Birkenhead and Arniston are some of the many famous shipwrecks found along the Cape L’Agulhas coastline.  Visitors to the area can still see the remains of the Meisho Maru 38 wreck on the shores on route to Suiderstrand.

The Cape L’Agulhas Lighthouse is the second-oldest working lighthouse in South Africa and was built in 1848.  It is one of only three buildings in South Africa to be inspired by Egyptian architecture.  Today it houses a Lighthouse Museum and restaurant.

During school holidays Cape L’Agulhas is a beehive of activity.  Most of the houses are holiday cottages.

The Cape L’Agulhas coast is a fisherman’s paradise.  Cob (kabeljou) and galjoen may be caught from the rocks, while catches from ski-boats include Cape Salmon, Yellowtail, Red Steenbras and even the occasional Snoek.

Where the two oceans meet: As determined by the International Hydrographic Organisation, the two mighty Oceans – Indian and Atlantic – meet at the most southern tip of the continent of Africa – Cape L’Agulhas.

However, the meeting point of the two ocean currents, the warm Agulhas Current and the cold Benguela Current, is a totally different issue, and must not be confused with the meeting of the Oceans.  The sea temperature in summer is a pleasant 20 – 22 degree Celsius, while the winter temperature is not much lower.

The Cape L’Agulhas region forms part of the Overberg.  The word Overberg, meaning over the mountain dates back three centuries to the Dutch phrase, “Over’t geberghte”. Flanked to the North and West by towering mountains, and bordered to the East by the beautiful Breede River, the Overberg cradles in her bosom the most Southern tip of the still untamed and ancient African continent.

This most Southern tip is situated in the Cape L’Agulhas region which offers a veritable paradise of nature in all her glory.  Bordered by blue mountain ranges, set in undulating hills in a kaleidoscope of gold, green and brown, with endless beaches and dunes.

Wherever you choose to stay in the Overberg – quality and affordable Overberg Accommodation is on offer.
