The "Vredefort" Dome Centre of the World’s Largest Meteorite Impact Structure
In the heart of South Africa, straddling the border between the North West and Free State provinces and on the doorstep of populous Gauteng, lies a truly unique, indeed mind-boggling site, the Vredefort Dome which has just been declared South Africa’s 7th World Heritage Site. What makes the Vredefort Dome so special that the entire world considers it worth of conservation and special status? The answer to this is easy: The Vredefort Mountain Land, involving the Dome Bergland Conservancy [give proper, new name], is the most spectacular landscape between the Magaliesberg Range in the northeast and the Drakensberg Mountains in the southern Free State Province. Anybody who has been on top of one of the prominent mountains overlooking the dome bergland has marveled on the beautiful ridge and valley country through which the idyllic Vaal River valley snakes.
How strong was the impact event?
Take the entire nuclear weapons arsenal of the world and blast it to smithereens in one go, and this explosion would only be a semblance of an impact event like that at Vredefort, so long ago. To gouge a whole of 100x40 km out of the Earth, an unimaginably gigantic explosion must have taken place. The rock and dust ejected from the crater was deposited around the world. The projectile and much of the immediate target rock was vaporised and more entirely melted. Remnants of this melt still occur in the form of large dikes of a special rock, known as Vredefort Granophyre, in the region. Further out from the point of the explosion, the rock was shattered – and anybody looking at the quartzite ridges of the berg land can see what that means: the rocks are thoroughly fractured and in many places fragmented. Earthquakes of magnitudes far off the normal scale would have shaken the planet. The force of this event even surpasses that from another enormous hit, the impact that killed off 70% of all life some 65 million years ago, including all the dinosaurs. But, as things go, this catastrophe was also a very fortunate event for us humans, as it meant that from this catastrophe the mammals could evolve and eventually conquer the planet – ultimately resulting in the highest developed life form that Earth has ever seen – mankind. Whether Vredefort had a decisive influence on life evolution on this planet is unknown. There was only algal life at the time, and primitive life forms (such as the cockroach) are notoriously resilient.
How was Vredefort recognized as the result of catastrophic impact?
For the last 50 years, scientists have debated and battled – absolutely the right word – about the origin of the Vredefort Structure. Some believed that the dome was the result of an internal explosion of sorts, whereas others favoured meteorite impact. Definitive evidence in the form of rock and mineral deformations that require huge pressures and temperatures as they can only be produced in the outermost parts of the Earth, the crust, by the impact of a large, ultra-fast extraterrestrial bolide was mostly only discovered in the last 15 years. The Vredefort melt rock, for example, contains a tiny trace of the extraterrestrial projectile – only discovered in 1996. The Vredefort impact structure is the largest and oldest of its kind known on Earth and has been a unique laboratory for those scientists specialising in chaos and catastrophe.
What are the special features of the Vredefort Dome?
The Vredefort Dome is beautiful. Its mountains and valleys, the Vaal River bed, and many different climatic and soil conditions giving rise to a vast variety of different vegetations, exceptionally varied bird life, all this makes the Dome a very special place to live in and to visit. But considering that all this beauty and specialty ultimately is the result of the world’s darkest moment, provides another dimension. Humans have inhabited the Vredefort Dome for at least 150 000 years – as ample evidence of Stone Age habitation proves. In Iron Age times, from about the 1300s to 1850, maybe as many as tens of thousands of Tswana people lived in the mountains and hills of the dome, likely because the varied landscape provided shelter and excellent grazing alike. In even more recent times, the area around Venterskroon has seen a little gold rush, when it was discovered that the rocks already mined since a few years at Johannesburg cropped out at surface and just below in the hills surrounding this hamlet (soon to become a bustling - and perhaps raucous??? – mining camp. This was shortly followed by the intriguing combat of the Anglo-Boer War, when General Christiaan de Wet made use of the impact-produced geology, and the landscapes based on the underlying geology, to play cat-and-mouse with the British troops. Geology, archaeology, biodiversity, history and culture – all the ingredients of a fascinating and intriguing pie. Activities in the Dome includes river rafting, abseiling, quad biking, game drives, dome tours, hiking trails and paintball to name just a few… Add to these already existing tourism facilities of highest standard, and you have the basis for a top World Heritage Site.
What does the future hold for the Vredefort area?
The Dome will continue to attract geologists and archaeologists – but its multi-faceted attractions should be enough to make every South African wish to come and pay tribute to one of the world’s outstanding natural and cultural heritage sites. Recognized as national and world heritage means that there is an obligation to conserve and protect, but also to make use of the resource for education and research, and economic development. This resource does belong to all South Africans, and sharing it will bring economic benefits to the Dome and its people. Sharing it will also show to all visitors how precious this site is and hopefully contribute to all of us noticing how valuable and irreplaceable our natural environment is. Prof. Uwe Reimold (Wits)

Gauteng Animal Adventure
Having grown up in Gauteng, Im a little biased and to have to do some boasting. I am so excited that we have so many opportunities right here. Gauteng is the home of business, corporate, sky rise buildings, finance, economy, money, the hub of Africa – but Gauteng really offers you safari tours, safari adventures and animal adventures – all malaria-free.
Being part of the corporate Gauteng world for over a decade, I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in several teambuilding, conferences and board meetings and these were very often based in the proverbial Gauteng bush, a mere drive outside of the economical Johannesburg.
My husband was in awe when I returned from corporate outings to explain how I came up so close with rhinos, elephants, cheetahs, lions and so forth in the wild, and in Gauteng.
We really should shout to the world that Gauteng can offer these amazing treats and experiences – come and feel a Gauteng safari tour, go on a Gauteng safari adventure or have a Gauteng animal adventure – naturally in one of Gauteng’s animal lodges.
The thought of drifting into sleep with the sound of the wild in the background, the odd roar or screech. What makes these experiences so special is that Gauteng is not typically viewed as being an adventurous offering. So it is an ideal opportunity to combine an official trip with an adventurous trip. And of course being a top class South African province, the accommodation will no doubt be of equal quality.
Make your Gauteng experience exciting and adventurous. Click here to find game lodge/ game farm accommodation or thrilling and exciting game drives in Gauteng. |

Addo Guest House Accommodation – Much “Addo About Elephants”
Thinking of Addo, think of a place dedicated to the preservation, conservation, protection and upliftment of the general elephant population. Elephant conservation is Africa’s most exciting conservation project. Be part of this special experience and visit the luxuries and beauties offered in Addo. The Addo elephant population has expanded to some 450 today from a low 11 in 1918 when the South African government ordered their slaughter.
Supporting Addo tourism is essentially supporting the conservation project and saving elephants.
Situated in the Lower Sundays River of the Cacadu District in the Eastern Cape and bordering Kirkwood, Addo is very popular for its elephant reserves, safaris and adventures. All of the Big 5 are offered in a malaria-free area, making it a rapidly accelerating tourism destination of choice.
It also boasts an annual Rose and Garden Show.
Addo boasts a mild climate, suited for game viewing and mild enough when on safari with small children.
Addo guest house accommodation offers a range between comfort, affordability and luxury – every thing to suit your needs and your pocket. Addo bed and breakfasts (B&B’s) are particularly situated in special places, making your visit that much more special. Addo is farm land, so it is possible if not likely that you will enjoy your accommodation hospitality with the citrus. Exclusive upmarket lodges, award winning guest houses and service that can only be described as exceptional are what you will find in Addo. This is what you will experience after visiting and enjoying accommodation at Addo guest houses.
Addo offers the exquisite Addo guest house accommodation, Addo bed and breakfasts, but also superior hotels, backpacking and hostel accommodation, in conjunction with conferencing facilities.
Guest Files supports the conservation and protection of natural and wildlife, and of course Addo tourism, so applauds the Addo community for their dedicated efforts.

Clarens – the Jewel of the Free State
What a special place and a definite holiday favourite. It is certainly picturesque. Accommodation is quaint and a treat, and ranges between guest houses, bed and breakfasts (B&B’s), self catering and hotels. Eateries and restaurants are fun and delicious.
Before having ventured there, colleagues of mine used to talk endlessly about the wonders of Clarens.
Guest Files once reported that Clarens was an ideal holiday destination, also because it hardly rains. One of our hospitality colleagues advised that it is because it snows.
Various aspects make it attractive - A rock formation, looking alot like the Titanic when it was sinking caused the rock to be named after the Titanic in 1912. Visitors flock there for viewing.
Clarens was named after a Switzerland village in 1910.
It has also recently been proclaimed as having some of the best fly fishing waters in South Africa. Other activities include hiking, golf, tennis, bowls, squash, horse riding, cultural visits, museums and simply treasuring the amazing sceneries.
So, Clarens is an attraction for the young and old. Reasonably centrally situated within South Africa, it is very close to other major centres and definitely warrants a visit. It offers the stressed and the overworked and simply those wanting to feel like people again a chance to travel to this special place and enjoy their treats and offerings.
A rock formation, looking a lot like the Titanic when it was sinking caused the rock to be named after the Titanic in 1912.
Clarens also offers inspiration or as muse to many – obviously because of its natural beauty and unspoilt grounds, encouraging artists to bring out their very best.
With few residents, the village offers visitors an opportunity to revive oneself. It’s an enlightening and uplifting experience.

Hospitality Portal
Ever considered about a hospitality portal – what it is, why you should list, when you shouldn’t, etc.
Detailed below, some thoughts and opinions: The internet has grown to mammoth proportions. We interact, communicate, book, buy, transact, enquiry and learn online 24/7. Accordingly, the concept of hospitality portals is ideally suited to marketing and advertising hospitality industries. The best means to get your hotel, B&B (bed and breakfast), guest house, lodge, hotel, restaurant, self catering, car hire, tours, etc is via a trustworthy and hard working hospitality portal.
How does one ensure that your listing/ advertising through the portal is viable: – Confirm the valid existence of the web site. I have become so disillusioned by establishing that web sites exist, but are not manned at all. Check how much movement takes place on the web and how quickly queries receive a response. Positive answers to these and you are on the right track. – Does the web master take sufficient effort to remain up to speed? Are they briefing you on any thing, helping you understand your industry better and staying abreast of change? – Whilst it might be really tempting to think that free hospitality portals offer all the benefits and suit all your advertising needs, you need to determine why the listing is free. Quite honestly as well, is the reality that portals that are truly marketed require some continuous expenses. Free portals may not have sufficient funding to adequately market for you. – Assess how your listing and/ or other advertising is portrayed. It can be very confusing and distracting to have to sift through online adverts and bombarding links. Can some one potentially interested in your offering truly focus on your special features and see your paraplegic facilities, 5 minutes from the beach, child-friendly, self-catering option, suits vegetarian, etc if you don’t know where to look. Check that the portal is designed to be clear, unobtrusive and encouraging the take-up of your hospitality establishment. Will people be encouraged to take up your accommodation? – Ito cost, assess their cost structure. You may be fooled by seeing that the listing is free, but not able to see through all the small print where they take a large portion of your rate through high commissions. – Often people looking for accommodation or other hospitality become disinterested if they see that they cannot directly contact the owner or manager, but have to work through an agent. A click here form takes you to some online form, which gets submitted to an uncertain place. How simple it is if your email, web address and contact telephone numbers are all shown very clearly. – You may even approach the portal and enquire on the list of search engines to which they have submitted their site.
Consider the above options, and thereafter list and register yourself with as many offering these benefits as you can possibly afford. Take care of your business and find the portals that want to suit and accommodate you.
Guest Files is proud to be respond positively to all these questions and encourages the listings of all Southern African hospitality establishments.
